Ready to take your rope sewing to the next level? In this class, you’ll create a shapely fruit basket with sculpted side handles—perfect for display or everyday use. We’ll cover essential techniques for form, structure, and clean finishing. This class builds on earlier skills by introducing how to manage a larger coil and shape it into a structured basket. Students will learn how to: create a stable round base, angle the rope to control wall height and basket shape, construct wide, sculpted and balanced side handles, and explore decorative stitch options to personalize their work. Students will learn to join cut ends of rope mid-process, and options for end finishes.

Pre-Requisite: Intro to Rope Sewing Beginner Class recommended, or prior experience sewing rope projects. Requirements: Sewing machine capable of zig zag stitch; presser foot that accommodates zig zag stitch. Extension table for your machine is recommended. If you don’t have one, bring a secure support to raise the surrounding area to the same height as your machine bed—extending at least 10” to the left of the needle. A sturdy box, hardcover books, or a covered paver block can work, as long as it’s steady and won’t shift while sewing. (This will also be noted on the supply list.) Take home project: A completed round basket with side handles, approximately 10” wide x 2-3” high (not including handles). Final size and shape will vary depending on machine type and student shaping. Optional project (time permitting): Small Tray with Handles: Students may choose to create a smaller tray-style basket, approximately 7-8” wide x 1-1.5” h, using the same shaping and handle techniques introduced in class.
