Aurifil 50wt is a 2-ply, 100% long-staple Egyptian Mako cotton thread spun in Italy — the industry standard for machine piecing, machine quilting, appliqué, and longarm work. Its fine weight means stitches settle into the fabric rather than sitting on top, keeping your piecing clean and your quilting subtle. It produces minimal lint, which means fewer thread breaks and less cleaning time on your machine.

What Aurifil 50wt is best for: Piecing and patchwork, machine quilting, subtle longarm quilting, needle turn appliqué, English paper piecing, machine embroidery, dense background designs, basting, and whole cloth quilting.

Spool sizes: The large 1422-yard spool is the best value for active quilters and longarm users. The small 220-yard spool is ideal for sampling colors or travel projects.

Which Aurifil weight is right for you? 50wt is the most versatile starting point. If you want more thread definition in your quilting, step down to 40wt. For bold decorative stitching and big stitch hand quilting, try 28wt or 12wt. For superfine detail work that virtually disappears into the fabric, 80wt is the choice.
