View full detailsHow to Choose the Right Seam Ripper
Not all seam rippers are equal — and the one that's right for you depends on what you're unpicking, how often you use it, and how much precision your work requires. Here's how to think about it.
A sharp, well-balanced single-blade ripper for routine seam removal. This is what you reach for on a standard cotton quilt top. The BERNINA is the one we can't keep on the shelf — fine point, perfect weight, clean cut every time.
Seam ripper on one end, stiletto on the other. The Amanda Murphy combo is the example — ideal if you do a lot of precision work, turning corners, or pressing seams flat. Two of the most-used tools at the machine in one handle.
Fine blade, heavy-duty blade, and a rubber thread-grabbing tip in one tool. The Dritz Seam-Fix is the go-to here — especially useful after unpicking when you need to remove stray threads quickly without picking them one by one.
Built-in LED light and detachable 3X magnifier. For dark fabrics, detailed embroidery removal, or anyone who sews with reading glasses. A genuine functional upgrade, not a gimmick — once you've used it on a navy print you'll understand.
The One Tip That Saves Fabric
Most sewists rip seams by running the blade along the stitching — which works but risks cutting the fabric if the blade catches. The better method: use the fine point to pop every third or fourth stitch on one side, then pull the long thread on the other side. It comes out in one clean pull with no fabric damage. A sharp seam ripper makes this significantly easier than a dull one.
Our Sarasota recommendation: Keep two seam rippers at your machine — a sharp everyday ripper for speed, and an LED or magnifier version for detail work on dark or small-scale prints. The BERNINA and the Sew Easy LED together cover every situation you'll encounter.
Seam Rippers as Gifts
A quality seam ripper is one of the most practical gifts for a sewist — used constantly, often overlooked when buying for oneself. The Kaffe Fassett seam ripper in particular makes a strong gift for any quilter who collects the fabric line.
