KAWANDI AS ART
Prerequisite: Must enjoy handwork!
Calm your day with a new way to create. Every decision leads you on your journey to creativity. This class will discuss traditional kawandi and guide you through the decisions that will lead to your unique artwork.
This tradition involves covering your piece with handwork, so if you don't enjoy handwork, you will prefer a different project. The scraps that you've been wondering what to do with (or giving away) will become your palette for your journey to a new way to express yourself. This class is about the decisions you make creating your own vision.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner
SUPPLY LIST AND PRE-WORK:
(I'm going to ask you to make a few decisions before you come to class)
1. Decide if you want to work on a square or rectangle.
2. Decide on a size. (I suggest no smaller than 8"x8" and no larger than a fat quarter, 18"x24")
3. Cut a piece of thinnish style cotton or cotton-blend batting the size of your finished piece. (You will be hand quilting, so no poufy stuff.)
4. Cut a piece of fabric 1-inch wider and 1-inch longer than your batting. This will be your backing fabric and the excess is pulled to the front. It may or may not show on the front, another decision.
5. Scissors, I use 5" embroidery scissors.
6. Pins, will hold pieces being worked on.
7. Thread, Decision!! Do I want to use one thread throughout or multiple colors, weights and textures of threads? You'll probably only use one or two in class. I have used #100 silk to #8 pearle cotton, and many weights in between
8. Needles, sharp pointed needles with eyes that will accommodate your thread choices. I use sharps and embroidery needles.
9. Thimble, comfortable, particularly important for the first round or two.
10. Scraps, all sizes, these are your paint and can be curated for color and contrast or "just whatever ya got", your choice.
OPTIONAL SUPPLIES:
- straight-edge or ruler
- hera marker or similar, or removable-ink marker pen (how straight do ya want that stitchin'), another decision.
